The Worms’ Plastic Buffet
Usually, most topics covered in SPE articles would focus particularly on global warming, climate change, and the like. For this entry, however, I will go off a tangent and focus on a slightly different topic — though it also counts as one highly necessary to address… as it also determines the fate of our planet.
The talk about plastic pollution has already been done to death. There’s probably nothing here that hasn’t already mentioned a dozen times in another article, documentary, or PSA. Fortunately, efforts are being made to mitigate our reliance on plastic, and hopefully, it would be one less problem to deal with in our battle against everything that is ruining our ecosystem.
So, before we get to the crux of the matter, I will summarize a bit about plastic.
Simply put, it’s a multipurpose, almost universal material that comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms. We use it for a wide array of reasons — ranging anywhere from containers that hold our food, water, and other belongings to protection or insulation against harmful elements.
Its greatest caveat comes from its most notable capability of endurance — in other words, it was built for a long-term run, but we often use it for the opposite purpose. Because of that, we tend to dispose of the indispensable. Unlike biodegradable materials that can break down into their base…
